Welcome to Natural Product Biotechnology Group

Medicinal and aromatic plants can lead to the discovery of pharmacologically interesting natural products and their biosynthesis. The major focus of this laboratory is to underpin the basic science of natural production formation in food and medicinal plants, especially in the area of phenolics and carotenoids. Our broad aim is to characterize the enzymes and genes responsible for the synthesis of fragrance, food colorant and bioactive compounds in plants. Some of the bioresources used in our laboratory are ecologically fragile, and therefore, in addition to phytochemical analysis which forms the basis of our studies, we also do plant cell and organ cultures to maintain these ecologically-sensitive plants such as, Swertia chirata, Canscora decussata, Hoppea fastigiata, for sustainable uses. The current research activities of this group are -

  • Elucidation of enzymatic routes to plant hydroxybenzoate-derived fragrance formation in Hemidesmus indicus
  • Screening and isolation of bioactive compounds from plants and plant cell/organ cultures of Canscora decussata
  • Isolation and separation of bioactive phenolic and carotenoid compounds from fruit pericarps of Arecaceae
  • Molecular biology of plant benzoic acid biosynthesis in Daucus carota
  • Phytochemistry and molecular biology of hydroxybenzoate-derived xanthones biosyntheses in Swertia chirata and Canscora decussata
  • Regulation of polyphenol and monoterpene volatiles biosyntheses in Camellia sinensis Darjeeling clone adapted in tropical climate
